Aegean Stories Vault

Our Project

Discover the rich history of Molyvos, a picturesque village on the island of Lesvos, Greece, perched on a hill facing the Turkish shores. Formerly known as ancient Methymna and Ottoman Molova, this unique location offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea to the west and the hinterland of Asia Minor to the north and northeast.

Molyvos has long been a hub of geopolitical and cultural significance, carrying forward the legacy of its ancient and medieval past. Serving as a bishopric well into the 17th century and becoming a vital administrative center under Ottoman rule, Molyvos is an intricate part of the history of the North Aegean, at the crossroads of cultures, empires, and nations.

The Aegean Stories Vault delves into this interconnected past through history, storytelling, and the peculiar lens of a family archive, spanning over 100 years (1830s–1940s). This collection provides a rare microhistorical view of a Greek family navigating a multi-confessional world shaped by merchants, German archaeologists, travel writers, Ottoman administrators, and military figures. Through these stories, we trace the evolution of a vibrant society amidst the rise of nationalism, offering a fresh perspective on the shared histories of the Aegean.

Join us on an exploration of Molyvos and its enduring legacy.

The Archive

The Aegean Stories Vault started when Mariza N. Krallis and Dimitris E. Krallis, first cousins with origins in Molyvos, opened a conversation about the personal archive of their grandfather, which is currently in the possession of Mariza and her brother Ioannis N. Krallis. Containing a wealth of materials dating to the period from 1833 to 1932, the year of his death, Ioannis K. Krallis’ archive is a unique entry point to the history of the North Aegean, but also to the larger East Mediterranean in the last century of Ottoman rule and the first years of Lesvos’ life as part of the Greek polity. Here we offer a general description of the archive and, as we complete the work of cataloguing, a full digitization of its materials. View more

North Aegean Stories

Since the summer of 2024 our team of scholars, students, and historically minded lay persons have been reading scholarship, primary documents, literary texts, and archival materials on the history and culture of Lesvos and its environs. Here you will find a series of reflections on various aspects of the social, administrative, cultural, and economic history of the North Aegean and the worlds around it. Beginning in antiquity and extending into the modern era by way of the Roman Middle Ages (the so-called Byzantine era) and Ottoman rule, this segment of the Aegean Stories Vault reveals a vibrant world waiting to be discovered. Historical Background

Here you may access general historical accounts of the ancient, medieval, Ottoman and modern history of the Island of Lesvos, written by historians of the region and the relevant periods. The essays offered here provide a useful entry point for anyone seeking to learn more about the history of the island and its environs. They reveal a world marked by notable regional and local characteristics that was, however, never isolated from developments on the broader geopolitical horizon. View more..

Interviews & Presentations

The Aegean Stories Vault seeks to capture the experiences of residents of Molyvos in the present even as it also records the reflections of North American students who visited the island, having studied its history, and seeking to have a hands-on experience with the place. In this segment of the vault, you will find interviews with artists, artisans, long-term Greek and foreign residents of Molyvos, and visiting students. We also include here video records of houses, spaces, and landscapes that capture the character and history of the place. View more…

Art Creation in Place

In June 2024, students from the Athens School of Fine Arts under the supervision of their instructor, Dr. Christina Sgouromiti, joined our group of researchers and students in Molyvos and embarked on discussions about history and art in place. Those conversations materialized in art inspired by Molyvos and its history, but also the traces of the past that emerge from the archival materials we have been studying. Here we exhibit fragments of the reflections, sketches, and the art created by our artist collaborators, as a testament to Molyvos’ power to inspire. View more…

Contributors

The Aegean Stories Vault has been a collaborative project from its inception. Much as the history of Lesvos straddles the shores of the Aegean and reaches across the Mediterranean world, so this project involves numerous people. Mariza Krallis and Dimitris Krallis are at the core. With them stand Aytek Soner Alpan and Maria Mandamadiotou, as well as researchers, lay and academic, emerging and established, from Greece, Turkey, the US, and Canada. As our project matures this team will keep growing, even as our research and work on Lesvos and the Aegean expands. View more…
