Dimitris and Mariza Krallis consider interesting epistolary connections among Molyvos, Paris, and London, dated to 1891
The 24-year-old Nikolaos P. Eleftheriadis from Petra Lesvos, sends letters from Paris to his future son-in-law, the 37-year-old Komninakis Krallis of Molyvos.
Nicholas, who signed the letter “N. P. Eleftheriades Esq.” (see note at the end), resides in London, and describes his stay in Notting Hill, but also his recent trip to Paris’ spectacular Catacombs.
At about the same time, three other events unfold in Lesvos, that lead to friendships and relationships.

Letter of Nikolaos Eleftheriadis from London to Komninakis Krallis in Molyvos, pp. 2-3, 1891
In that same year, a local radiologist of future renown is born in the village of Agia Paraskevi, with a name and surname drawn from ancient Greece. A future Member of Greek Parliament, from Lesvos, and General Director of Agriculture is born in the town of Mytilene, while a new bank is founded by a member of a well-known family of the island.
What were the attitudes of the local families of the time towards the education of their children, in Lesvos’ Ottoman period? What was the social and cultural contribution of these individuals, and what their influence on the local community, in the 19th and 20th centuries? How near or far were London, Paris, and Vienna from Lesbos at the time? Are the three men mentioned above, who were Plato P. Plato, Ioannis S. Karamanos and Panos M. Kourtzis, connected to the archival material?
These and many more questions emerge from the study of the rich family archive that Mariza Krallis has in her possession and that she and Dimitris Krallis are exploring.
